A ring is a push notification. It costs us nothing whether it happens once a month or ten times a night, which is why the free tier can be generous about the part that actually matters — proving that your phone really does wake you at 3am.
Phone calls cost real money, so they're on the paid plan. That is the entire reason, and it is the only boundary in the product where our cost, the value to you, and the words already on your screen all change at the same moment.
We will never stop calling because you ran out of credits.
Pro does not meter calls, and there is no balance to top up. An alert that cannot reach you because of a billing counter is the exact failure this product exists to prevent, arriving on purpose.
Escalation stops when it has failed — when we have rung, called, and tried your backup people — never because money ran out.
